Mermother Amma is an ancient mermaid who guards one of the entrances to the Wayward East. She is the mother of all koi mermaids. She takes care of her two daughters, Finlet and Bekko, and is in deep mourning over her daughter Posidonia. Posidonia married Sir Lamorak, and Amma blames him for her death, and by extension hates all humans.
Early Life[]
She has seen the rise and fall of civilisations, swallowed whirlpools whole, and slew the Queen of Piranha. She has lived a very long time. At some point, Sir Lamorak met Posidonia and they eloped together, leaving the Mermaid Tunnels on the Silvershore side, which killed Posidonia. Amma was wracked with grief from this event, and holds a grudge against all humans.
When she becomes sick with gill rot, she hides it from her daughters in an attempt to save them from the grief of her loss.
History[]
When Rilla and Lord Arum pass through her chambers, they are initially captured and taken to see Amma. She is enraged at seeing the human, and sentences them to death by assimalation into the great Amma. When Rilla spots her illness, she offers to heal her. Amma initially takes great offense, before forcing her daughters out of the room. She then accepts the humans offer to heal her gill rot, but sends her to a prison shell and has Lord Arum heal her instead. This doesn't go very well, as Arum isn't a doctor.
Eventually, Arum gives up on trying and instead tries to reason with Amma, and they discuss being immortal-ish monsters. By the time Arum convinces Amma to let Rilla heal her, Rilla has already convinced Finlet and Bekko to help her. She heals Amma and clears the water of infection, and Amma grapples with trusting a human after what happened last time. When Rilla offers to teach Finlet and Bekko science, Amma panics at the idea of her daughters leaving the water and attacks Rilla and Arum. Finlet and Bekko try to hold her back, but she breaks through. Arum and Rilla run to the Silvershore side of the tunnel, and escape.
Personality[]
Aloof and full of herself, has great pride in being a mermaid and will not be questioned.
Abilities[]
She shows incredible strength in her great size, able to punch through stone easily.
Relationships[]
Finlet and Bekko[]
Amma is protective of them, and can order them around,
Lord Arum[]
They bond over not wanting to outlive their loved ones. This is the first time we see Arum really open up and emote. Amma describes him as "a babe" when he says he is only a few centuries old.
Sir Lamorak[]
Amma seemed to have like Lam at first, describing him as having lured Posidonia away with charming words. Lamorak has accepted that Amma would hate him, and equally blames himself for Posidonia's death.
