Brock Engstrom is a retired thief who lives at the Oasis hotel and resort. He enjoys significant accommodations in return for drawing crowds of people who know his reputation to the casino.
Early Life[]
Engstrom was once a successful but mediocre thief. He retired very wealthy and moved into the Oasis Hotel and Resort on Mars. Despite his lack of real skill, he ended up with the greatest getaway car in the galaxy, the Ruby Seven; it is implied that he did not steal it. Instead, he bought it from its previous owner, Jet Sikuliaq, who sold the car because he needed money for Buddy Aurinko's surgery and prosthetic eye.[1]
History[]
Peter Nureyev and Juno Steel pose as newlywed couple Duke and Dahlia Rose, both amateur thieves.[2] They visit the Oasis casino seeking Engrstrom's knowledge of how to board the Utgard Express, a bullet train of unparalleled speed which acts as a high security vault, often for dangerous objects. "Duke" and Engstrom play several rounds of the complex card game Ragnian Street Poker, betting and trading information. During the course of the game, Juno watches for evidence that Engstrom is cheating. When he finds it, Nureyev threatens to reveal this to the Oasis management--unless Engstrom provides the information they require. Engstrom agrees, and tells them what he knows about the Utgard Express.
The next morning, Engstrom sends an assassin after the couple. They escape, stealing the Ruby Seven in the process. Engstrom and his arm-for-hire Valencia follow them onto the Utgard Express, where they are eventually defeated. Juno leaves Engstrom alive, but severely injured and stuck on the train, so his ultimate fate is unknown.
