Dark Matters is a dark ops organization that exists outside the galaxy-spanning Solar government.

History[]

Dark Matters was a thing of urban legend, until its existence was made public roughly a century ago.[1] It is unknown to the public whether the agency existed previously or was based on the urban legend. Director W implies that they played a role in the cover up of the Osiris case about 200 years ago, so it can be assumed that they have been around for a long time. Dark Matters played a role in ending The Galactic Civil War. Director W calls Dark Matters "referees of war".

Abilities[]

Dark Matters is known for being secretive and efficient. They only hire the 'quietest and deadliest the galaxy has to offer.'[2] They have been known to 'disappear' people, and are party to technology beyond that which is conceivable to the average person. Apparently they run a witness protection program in which they resettle people to remote places. They also are in possession of highly advanced robotics that are controlled by Neurolinks.

Infrastructure[]

Dark Matters is a vertically oriented organization.[2] The second-highest position in the organization is that of Subdirector, which would imply the highest is Director. Agents are not told what the next step is for them in the hierarchy until they have already reached it. Promotion to Subdirector is decided based on a psychological fitness test called the Mental-Emotional Fitness Exam, which pits the Agent against a series of challenges involving personal attachment, civilian risk, and completely unknown variables with no support or information. Sasha Wire achieved the highest recorded score on her MEFE.[3]

Succession is also often arranged by the murder of an agent by their subordinate. Though Directors apparently also make use of the same to exchange their subordinate agents.

There has been a change in Dark Matters approach recently, due to the ascent of Director W. When hacking into their databases Rita found that their organization looked like somebody was moving into a new place. Director W suggests that the old ways of Dark Matter were not very sufficient and that things have been improved.

Known Operations[]

  • The assassination of Buddy Aurinko's father.[4]
  • Protection of the inventor M'tendere from the Solar government, and then the assassination of M'tendere after a reassessment of priorities several years later.[5]
  • Investigation of the Death Mask of Grimpotheuthis' possible supernatural properties.
  • The shutdown of Oldtown for Sasha Wire's MEFE. [3]
  • The capture of the Aurinko Crime Family (ongoing)
  • The cover up of the events on plaent Osiris in the Outer Rim about 200 years ago.
  • The pursuits of so called radicals, which come in different classes, aligned with their potential to change humanities future.

Quotes[]

JET:: In its earliest form, close to three hundred years ago, Dark Matters was a band of pirates. As small as our own, to start. But not for long.
RITA: Pirates?! Really?! Hey, waitaminute!! If you’re all pirates too, how come you get to bully us? What happened to honor among thieves and all that stuff?
SASHA: We aren’t thieves anymore.
JET: In the sense that your theft is no longer illegal, yes. But that is always how Dark Matters has kept their tech so advanced: they steal it from corners of the galaxy too far apart to communicate with one another, then enlist or destroy the creator to ensure nobody else has it.
