Lord Arum, He Who Rules the Swamp of Titan's Blooms is a four-armed, lizard-like monster, and has classified himself as "a magical construct that defies petty biological labels."[1] He is a Familiar to, and was created by, The Keep. He rules over his swamp by watching over its ecosystem and creating life to put in it. Additionally, he had been assigned by The Senate to create abominations by using the Moonlit Hermit. As noted by Sir Damien, there appears to be something human within his violet eyes.

Early Life[]

When Arum was a hatchling, he was raised by The Keep. Rilla wryly notes that The Keep is like his mother, though Arum dislikes the comparison.[2] The Keep would often give him treats and let him do as he pleased as a child,[3] though he was not permitted to leave The Keep until he was older. He was a very lonely child, and often wished to participate in monster culture like Echidnacht. He attempted to celebrate with just The Keep, but lost in the wrestling match he initiated against it.[4] Lord Arum is a few centuries old.[5]

He has attended The Monster Senate of the Northern Wilds on many occasions, and was tasked with using the Moonlit Hermit to create weapons and creatures to help in the war against humans. His notable creations include The Janus Beast and the Echo Beast.

History[]

Personality[]

When Lord Arum first makes his appearance in Knight of the Crown, he is a mysterious, but sympathetic, antagonist to Sir Damien. As the story progresses, Sir Damien grows increasingly distracted by his attraction to Arum's appearance, as well as his arrogant but honest personality.

He continues to act as an antagonist to the human characters as he works against the Second Citadel, even kidnapping Rilla to protect the secrecy of his experiments. Yet, as Rilla and Lord Arum spend more time together, Rilla describes him as being a considerate, intelligent, and likable collaborator.

He has a romantic, dramatic, lofty view of magic, and of life itself. When in a good mood, he likes to tease. Both his love interests like these qualities most of the time.

He is in general extremely prickly and doesn't like new people. He distrusts most humans on principle.

Abilities[]

Capable of fighting with knives. Can create life with the help of both The Keep and formerly the Moonlit Hermit. Created clever traps and creatures for use against humans. His equipment quality and inventory skills are far below Rilla's standards, which can get in the way of both their work, though he is improving.

Relationships[]

The Keep[]

The Keep is described in the script for Moonlit Hermit as, "A living home beyond comprehension in scope and power; unclassifiable, shifting, irregular," and that it "likes music and babysitting"[6], which is demonstrated when Olala comes to visit and The Keep is reminded of when Arum was a hatchling.[3]

In Part 2 of the same arc, Arum tells Rilla that the Keep, "had a hand in creating every living thing here, and it is the source that keeps them living."[2]

Rilla implies that the Keep is "basically [Arum's] mom" to which Lord Arum takes offense, insisting it is far more complicated. (The Keep sides with Rilla.)[6]

The Keep is a magical god-like force on par with The Garden of Graves, and it created Arum as its Familiar out of pure magic. Arum was raised by The Keep and can be healed by mearly being in its presence,[7] but he also protects it.[1]

Sir Damien[]

Initially flirtatious rivals, Arum and Damien grow to know and admire each other during the latter half of season 2. They, with Rilla, begin a romantic relationship. During The Lovers of the Fallen Tower (Part 1), they continue to clash over Damien's knightly oaths against monsters, and their mutual lack of effort to communicate. They reconcile in the following episode.

Amaryllis of Exile[]

Lord Arum kidnapped Rilla after she found and took home his top-secret weird grub for study,[8] and began collaborating with her in the hope that her medical knowledge would help him heal The Keep. While their relationship was initially antagonistic, they grew to appreciate each other's talents, and subsequently developed romantic feelings for each other. They, with Damien, begin a romantic relationship during The Battle at World's End (Part 6).

Talfryn[]

Arum loves to tease Talfryn, enjoying how easy he is to scare. They get along, and share a passion about nature.

Marc[]

Arum and Marc have a rough start when they meet and Arum captures Marc and has to go through his recorder in order to not kill him. But they become friends, with Marc trusting Olala to Arum's care later. When Marc becomes a monster-slaying knight, he is under the impression that Arum "gets it", though this is not accurate, as when Arum finds out Marc is right hand man to Sir Tristan he completely writes Marc off as a traitor.[9] After the invasion of Silvershore, when most of the city has been reduced to rubble, Marc saves Arum and keeps him in his basement, feeding him his rations.[10] Arum, having promised Damien and Rilla he would return to them, begs Marc on his hands and knees, despite his injuries, to free him and help him return to his loves. This makes Marc very uncomfortable, as he hasn't quite come around to the idea of going against the Citadel. He puts off any decision, much to Arum's frustration. Eventually, Marc caves and resolves to ask Sir Galahad for help crossing the Mirrored Planes with Arum. After Galahad's death, Ale, Angelo and Marc help the injured Arum cross the Mirrored planes and return to Damien and Rilla.

Olala[]

Arum is caring and grandfatherly to Olala, teaching her about monster culture. At first he believes her to be a monster who was told she was half human, but later accepts her as she is. Arum can get protective of Olala at times.

  • Kevin Vibert once said “Dude ain’t lizard, lizard ain’t got four arm”.[12]
  • Lord Arum is not the first Familiar of The Keep, with two others being named Vaxellius of the Purple Plumage[2] and TikTik the Iridescent[5]
