Queen Mira is the exceptional (and exceptionally exhausted) ruler of The Second Citadel. The kind of leader who is completely overwhelmed because she insists that she have a hand in everything…though to be fair, she’s also the only person in the Citadel who knows how everything works. Has no time for nonsense. Constantly dragged down by the sexism of her officials.
Her collection of headscarves is priceless.[1]
Early Life[]
Had a very sheltered childhood, with tutors teaching her everything. Has a passion for books, and is known for reading about every subject imaginable.[2]
History[]
She is targeted by a monster that commands fear itself, which spread fear and paranoia throughout her Citadel. The fear-bug had a direct connection with her, and would sometimes speak through her into her writing. When the group consisting of Damien, Angelo, Caroline, Marc and Talfryn defeat the fear-bug she is incredibly grateful to them, even granting Marc and Talfryn knighthood.
The Kite performs a systemic attack on Milltown where he kills a resident every night, recording it on a soundstone to send to the Queen the following morning. He demands that she find and give him the changeling Olala. After 20 days of this, she is incredibly stressed and worn out. When Caroline brings her word that they have found Olala, she orders her to capture her by any means necessary. Once she meets Olala, however, she sees that she is a child and refuses to give her to The Kite. Instead, she orders Sir Angelo to guard Olala so she is not captured by The Kite. She is in the process of putting together strategies to help Milltown when the whole problem sort of solves itself when Olala goes to Milltown on her own and The Kite resolves to attack the Citadel directly instead.
After the attempts on her life by both monsters and The Kite, she is shaken in her own faith in her leadership and gives more and more power to Sir Absolon. This involves his idea of expanding the definition of "monster" to include traitors and magic users, rather than simply telling people the truth about Sir Galahad, as well as bringing knights from the golden age out of retirement to mentor the new generation of knights.
When the Off-Worlders come to visit the Citadel Mira is incredibly wary of them, but cedes to Sir Absolon's advice to welcome them as guests. This backfires when The Hand leaves, having assessed their military power, and the Second Citadel is destroyed.
Only after the fall of the Second Citadel does she realize that she has put far too much power in the hands of a buffoon.
She is convinced by Olala and Caroline to work with The Monster Senate to help fight against the Off-World Invaders.
After the Off-Worlders are driven away, she makes a proclamation ending the monarchy and giving up her power. She is offered a position on the Senate of the Northern Wilds but turns it down, as she is done with having power.
Relationships[]
Sir Marc[]
Considers her the smartest person in the world.[2] Sir Marc also heeds her orders without question and has fought brilliantly for her during his knightdom.
Sir Galahad[]
Blames her for weakening the Second Citadel with reforms and high standards for the conduct of her knights, when he considers monster killing the top priority.
Sir Caroline[]
Doesn't think she reforms enough.[3] Mira has a pretty one-sided admiration for Caroline, as pretty much the only other competent person who works for the Citadel. Once Caroline leaves, Mira feels lost and unwisely relies on the wisdom of the most confident sounding man around her- Sir Absolon.
Sir Absolon[]
The man has so little respect for her but she agrees to everything he says anyway. Refuses to comprehend Mira dismissing him from his post, laughs it off and continues on.
Abilities[]
Commands every knight in the Citadel. Is a strong leader and capable of creating battle strategies.
