Reaper Kestrel, also known as The Tengu, is a Tengu god of the duel who resides on a mountaintop in the Southern Frosts near the Southern Sea. She has been alive for centuries and has grown tired of duelling people who climb her mountain. Due to paranoia from her brother being killed by Galahad, she uses magic to deter people from climbing her mountain with a magical blizzard and an unconsciousness curse.
Early Life[]
At the same moment as the universe, five Tengu were born.[1] At some point Reaper Kestrel settled on a mountain in the Southern Frosts and never left. She can see anything from her mountaintop, and loves to watch human drama unfold. Witnessed the true story of the three saints.
History[]
Caroline decides to climb the Tengu's mountaintop in order to ask for help agains the Off-World invaders. After Caroline is severely injured, Lam and Olala take Caroline on a sled up the mountain. They are buffered by the magical storm and sleeping draft, and Olala transforms into a Yeti to resist it, but ultimately falls unconscious. Reaper Kestrel takes the oppurtinity to search their bags, before taking them to her camp and changing Caroline's bandages. She makes snow rabbit stew for them before they wake up. Caroline attempts to challenge her to a duel but she refuses to fight "the injured one". She then clarifies that one of their group must duel her to the death if the rest are to leave the mountain, and if they don't she will be forced to hunt each of them down to the ends of the earth.
When Lam realizes what manner of creature Caroline brought them to, he devises a plan with his "piercing eye" to catch the Tengu on a technicality. After Olala and Lam ask the Tengu why she won't just help them against the invaders, she answers that one of her siblings had previously lost a duel and helped fight the Off-Worlders, but that she no longer believes that's a viable strategy since they just came right back. She also clarifies that she cannot leave her mountaintop unless she loses a duel, and she is incabable of holding back in a duel. Lam asks about the specifics of a duel, the answer being "an equal battle between two single combatants, each using the same type of weapon".[2] He challenges her to a duel of the game "three-point" with wooden swords, of which he was the champion back in his day (forty years ago). Reaper Kestrel creates a perfect replica of Lam's old wooden training sword, and they begin the duel.
Personality[]
Laid back, too old for this crap- willing to let Lam, Olala and Caroline relax and rest before one of them duels her. Willing to explain the conditions of the duel and does not try to trick them. Very honest. Laughs easily.
Abilities[]
A god of the duel with immense magical power. Can create any weapon out of wind and crystal blood, and uses this to match the weapon of whoever challenges her to a duel. Also able to exactly match someones fighting stance and improve on it.
Can see and hear anything from her mountaintop, with the caveat that she can only observe one thing at a time.
Relationships[]
Reaper Corvid[]
Outwardly regards her brother as naive for trusting any human, but clearly hates Galahad far more for murdering her brother outside of a duel.
Sir Lamorak[]
She likes him a lot, and becomes sad when she has to kill him, and elated when Lam avoids this fate. Gives him advice on his fighting stance. They banter while dueling. When she sees Lam pick up a weapon and rushes over, she grants him a question and a favor before she kills him, and helps fight off the Off-World soldiers who were nearby where he died.
