“ | It’s a fool who thinks the greatest getaway car is the fastest, Juno: there are hundreds of things one can do to stop a car in its tracks, and then of what use is speed? What one needs is not velocity: it’s strategy. The maneuver to avoid the roadblock, to jam the radar, to shield the electromagnetic pulse. And the Ruby Seven is the only vehicle in the galaxy that can do just that: strategize. | ” |
“ | And I have been thinking of the Ruby 7, Juno. I have been thinking that there is much more to it than we understand. But I know, too, that it is our family, and if there is any possible way it can be here for us, it is, and it is within this airlock now. | ” |
The Ruby Seven, also known as the Ruby 7, is a shapeshifting alien from another galaxy that disguises itself as a unique, extremely technologically advanced green automobile.[2] It is renowned for its ability to strategize its way out of difficult situations, and has a status as the ultimate getaway car[3] thanks to a career belonging to the Unatural Disaster. Due to its alien nature, it is considered a Class-X radical and has been hunted by Dark Matters for years. The Ruby uses it/its pronouns, but feminine terms have been used for it.[3]
Early Life[]
The Ruby crash-landed in the Milky Way galaxy and disguised itself as a car, and slowly learned more about humanity. The galaxy it came from is incredibly different to the Milky Way.
History[]
The Ruby was studied by M'tendere[4], and later stolen by Jet Siquliak, who famously used it to steal the Iris of Jupiter. The car fell into the hands of many different criminals throughout the years, and its existence is a closely guarded secret in the world of crime. It eventually fell into Brock Engstrom's possession, where it sat in his garage before Peter Nureyev commandeered it to escape the Oasis Casino with Juno Steel.
During the events of Juno Steel and the Train from Nowhere (Part 2), the Ruby Seven identifies Juno as the best option for escape, dispensing a rifle for Juno to shoot the pursuing vehicles. Valencia taunts Juno, suggesting that Nureyev just came to Brock Engstrom to steal the Ruby Seven. Juno later asks Nureyev to return the car to the HCPD, once their job is done.
Sometime later, Miasma is able to intercept the car and take possession of it. She uses it to escort Nureyev and Juno to an ancient Martian tomb, buried miles below the surface of the planet.
Nureyev eventually gets hold of the Ruby Seven again, but instead of taking it to the HCPD he brings it to Jet Siquliak, likely via the Cerberus Province.
Juno, Nureyev and the Ruby Seven are united in Juno Steel and the Soul of the People (Part 2), when Juno joins the Aurinko Crime Family. The Aurinkos use the car during their heists, most notably in Le Verrier, when obtaining the key from M'tendere.
After the crash of the Carte Blanche at the end of Juno Steel and the Shadows on the Ship (Part 2) the Ruby Seven is badly damaged. Jet Siquliak mentions that it has never been damaged this badly before. He admits to Rita that he does not quite understand how the Ruby's engine operates or how to fix it. By the end of Juno Steel and the Mega-Ultrabots of Cyberjustice (Part 2), the Ruby has succesfully healed itself.
During Juno Steel and the Heart of It All (Part 1) the Ruby has developed a bit of a temper, as it starts talking back to Jet. Buddy is joking that she'll "allow the car its moody teenage years" and "buy it an industrial supply of eyeliner and posters of sad young men" once their heist is finished.
When the Aurinko Crime Family is captured by Dark Matters in Juno Steel and What Lies Beyond (Part 3) the crew find out the Ruby is much more than a car. It seems to have understood that Dark Matters came looking for it and hid within the walls of the Carte Blanche with by shapeshifting into a more liquid form. When Juno manages to escape into the airlock, the Ruby Seven approaches him and taps him on the shoulder. At first Juno is upset, questioning the it. He deduces that the Ruby was "the one that pulled [everyone] out of the drink on that desert planet". He also yells at it for not helping them in the dangerous situation, stating it is not as special as Jet thought and calls it "the family dog". As its reply the Ruby gives Juno the course to Jet, Buddy, Rita, Vespa and Nureyev, revealing that it knows the thief’s real name. When Juno asks it about it, it replays a bit of the conversation Juno and Nureyev had during their first trip in the Ruby Seven several years ago.
Eventually Juno accepts that the Ruby is his only companion in that moment and asks it to take him to Io, where he asks Puck Falco for help. Ruby stays in car disguise as much as possible, and Puck compliments Juno on his "nice car". When Juno tries to drive in the snow without proper precautions, it makes panicked beeps but still relents to him, despite them crashing moments later. It seems to tell him off for that, which Juno protests to.
When Juno goes to track down Mick, the Ruby helps him pull pranks on the Lately children by sneaking into their house and turning on with nobody behind the wheel. When Juno compliments it on playing the part well, it beeps happily.
When they rescue Rita, she is elated to see the Ruby, and makes kissy noises towards it. Puck remarks that "you two are so goddamn weird about this car". The Ruby acts as their getaway car when they break out of Aurinko Permanent Corrections.
Personality[]
The Ruby Seven changes and grows in personality as the series progresses. Its true thoughts and feelings are difficult to know, but it clearly cares very deeply for its family. It rescued them all from drowing on the desert-planet, but also sent a distress signal to Dark Matters that lead them to attacking the crew. Juno posits that the Ruby simply didn't know what it was doing, as it doesn't understand humans. This could likely also be the reason it tries to help Jet set back his recovery, and proposes that he use the bomb on Neptune.
The Ruby finds comfort in its family, especially Jet, which is likely because of the amount of time they spent together.
The Ruby misses its home galaxy a lot. At first it couldn't return, but even once it recovered enough to make the trip back, it remained with the Aurinkos in order to help them, which demonstrates how much it loves them.[5]
When Juno develops the ability to psychically communicate with the Ruby, it talks to him more and more and even offers its own opinions on what he does, though it always listens to order its given. When Juno briefly is imprisoned on Tyr, the Ruby misses him.[6] It will try to follow orders even when unable to.[7]
Abilities[]
At top speed, the Ruby Seven is capable of shattering the sound barrier, but its true prowess lies in the fact that it can be used to analyze any situation for an optimal escape scenario. Thus, the Ruby Seven is known as the best getaway car in the galaxy. In addition, it is shown to respond to verbal commands, such as increasing engine power to maximum or summoning it to a specified location.[8]
Additionally, the Ruby Seven can shapeshift and transform itself into metallic goo,[9] change its color to camoflage itself,[10] send distress signals through space, and psychically sense human emotions and recognize people based on their feelings. This may be related to how the Ruby does not require light to be able to see.[11]
The Ruby posesses self-healing abilities,[12] and can feed off of psychic energy to help with this process. It can also survive when seperated, and maintains a psychic link with its other half.[11]
The Ruby can also synthesise materials that it has seen before, which it does with Juno's clothes, Dark Matters' neomethamphetamine,[13] the Curemother Prime,[3] a dangerous explosive,[4] and a rifle.
M'Tendere notes that the Ruby seems to make people forget about it, pointing to its psychic abilities and desire to remain hidden.[4]
Relationships[]
Jet Siquliak[]
Jet and the Ruby have spent a long time together, and the Ruby finds Jet's presence very comforting. The Ruby will do anything Jet tells it to, because of the trust it has in him.
Juno Steel[]
Juno was the only one it could communicate with for a while, so the Ruby semed to like him more than others. When Juno tries to out it as an alien to the rest of the family, it stops him and shows him a memory of when Juno found out it was an alien. Juno realises it's sensitive about it because of what he said, and reassures it that the family will be fine with it, which is later proven correct.
