Sir Absolon the Swift is the leader of the journeyman knights of the Second Citadel. He prejudiced Sir Damien against Sir Marc by warning him that Marc is not to be trusted,[1] and presumably contributed to Marc's repeated rejection to the knights' ranks. He is a minor antagonist to multiple Second Citadel characters.
Early Life[]
He rose to the Captain of the Journeymen position before Queen Mira came into power.
He mentored Sir Damien and Sir Angelo. Told them many tales of the golden age knights.[2]
It is implied that he contributed to ableist discrimination against Marc's admission to the knights.[1]
He is an advocate for dunking witches.
History[]
Quanyii brings Olala (hidden in his pocket) to meet Absolon and trick him into loaning his key to the Trophy Archive. Absolon and Sir Caroline disagree about what course of action to take regarding both Milltown and Olala.
Even when faced with The Kite's true identity, he remains in denial of it and advises the Queen to not tell the public, and instead broaden the definiton of the word "monster" so the knights can better understand how to deal with human opponents. The Queen ends up ceding both the Captain of the Guard position and the Captain of the Journeyman Knights position to Sir Absolon, giving him a significant amount of power in the Citadel.
When he is told of the dangers of the Off-World invaders, he comes to the conclusion that any group that would destroy a city of "monsters"- that is, monsters and human monster-sympathisers- is an ally to the Citadel. So when The Hand visits the Citadel in order to assess their military power, he welcomes him with gusto, even offering to throw a feast in his honor. The Queen nervously points out that if the Off-Worlders wished them harm, they would have no way of defending themselves, which Absolon brushes off.
After the Citadel falls, he orders his men to find his writing desk so he can conjure a plan of action. The fact that even in the most dire of times he still can't take aything seriously is what makes Mira realize that he has no idea what he's doing. She attempts to officially dismiss him, which he laughs off. When she insists again, he calls her hysterical. Marc enters and punches him in the stomach with the help of Dampierre, which shuts him up. When Mira is convinced by Olala and Caroline to find new allies against the Off-Worlders, he advises her against it, and nearly calls Olala something rude before Caroline literally growls at him to shut him up. When he discovers that Queen Mira is to ally herself with the Monster Senate, he attempts to attack Senator Snoutt but Caroline takes him down before he can. He is so bamboozled and betrayed by the idea of the Citadel working with monsters that he completely defects against the Queen.
He attempts to defect to the Off-Worlders' side, but they instead capture him and interrogate him for information. He tells them about the Saints' Relics, and leads them to the Undersea Palace. He maintains illusions of being on their side, but The Hand does not care for him and demonstrates his firepower by shooting Absolon dead.
Personality[]
Sir Absolon comes across as macho, condescending, and self-important. He is nostalgic for knights of the past, whom he considers superior witch-hunters and monster-slayers. He will often fanboy over and tell stories about the golden age knights.[3] When he meets Sir Lamorak, he claims to have been introducing himself to people as his protoge, despite them having never met. In response, Lam punches him in the face.[4]
Abilities[]
Capable of making strategies, but they're never very good. Out of practice as a boots-to-the-ground knight- Sir Absolon the Swift is not nearly as swift anymore.[4]
Relationships[]
Queen Mira[]
Work closely together- Mira leaned on him an unhealthy amount after the attempts on her life, and because he sounded confident fully believed that he knew what he was doing. It takes her until the fall of the Second Citadel for her to realize that she gave far too much power to a complete moron.
Caroline[]
She steals his horse. They hate each other. Absolon calls her "Carrie" condescendingly.
