Angelo the Strong, previously Sir Angelo, is a kind and jovial man, who was formerly a monster-slaying knight of the The Second Citadel. He's known for his incredible strength and prodigious size, and is incredibly knowledgeable about geology due to hailing from a mining town. He gets along well with children, and dreams of becoming a babysitter.
Early Life[]
Angelo was born Angelo Of-Quarry.[2] The rest of his family is all very short, and his mother makes excellent cockatrice stew.[3] When he was a teenager, as a form of rebellion he would only kiss his mother twice on the cheek before bed. He seems to have come from a very healthy family, getting along with his entire extended family. In his childhood, he would stick out due to his height, and often attract attention without meaning to.
History[]
Angelo is first introduced when he is assigned to work with Sir Caroline to investigate a series of dissapearances in an abandoned mine near where he grew up. He is initially sexist to her, but soon recognizes and apologizes for his behavior. When he asks for a kiss to seal their job well done, Caroline punches him in the face
We later learn that Angelo and Sir Damien are best friends and rivals, with their monster slaying numbers matching each other exactly. Angelo acts as Damien's second in his final duel with Lord Arum, and is the one to inform Damien of Amaryllis of Exile's capture by the lizard. He requests then to be let off Sir Caroline's secret mission so he can help his friend find his fiancee, but she refuses. Luckily the two goals end up aligning, and Damien leverages relevant information he has in order to be brought along. The three of them head in the direction Damien then points, towards The Swamp of Titan's Blooms, but stop on the way to investigate reports of witchcraft in the village of Ballast. They discover Vivian, a man who has been homophobically ostracized by the village, and his pet crocodile hound Nimue, who has been interrupting local fishing habits in order to try and provide for Vivian. Angelo restrains Nimue outside while Caroline acquiesces Vivian's request to be euthanized.
After Caroline ditches them on Vivian's rowboat, he and Damien encounter Sir Marc, and Talfryn, and they themselves ensnared by the Sportive Nymphs because Damien and Marc can focus on nothing but their rivalry. Sir Marc defeats Angelo in single comabat by use of his wits and inventions, and Angelo again discovers that his preconceptions are at odds with his personal values, and apologizes to Marc for ableism and Talfryn for speaking condescendingly to him, encouraging Damien to better his attitude as well. Angelo then forms part of the ensemble that breaches Fort Terminus and defeats the fear monster.
In season 3, his likeness is borrowed by Olala when she and Quanyii attempt to break into the Citadel's archives. He is then assigned to guard Olala in her tower chamber, but reveals to her that he intends to mask himself, go by "The Vigilant He," and save Milltown from The Kite. Olala pleads to be allowed to assist him. He agrees to train her as his "side-kicker," but insists she stay put. Once in Milltown, Angelo charges in, attempting to save a child named Daniel. He is stopped by Ale, a local swordsman. Angelo assumes Ale is an adversary and crosses blade with him, greatly admiring Ale's skill. Ale calmly criticizes Angelo's "schoolboy" technique, pointing out that Angelo is clinging rigidly to forms he learned training as a knight. Ale beats him easily because he uses an approach tailored to his own needs. As they converse, Angelo finally realizes they are on the same side, and compliments Ale on his "fair face and trusting eyes." Ale is unimpressed and sends Angelo home. Angelo gushes about Ale and the night's events to Olala, telling her that he has fallen in true love with Ale, whom he believes to be a woman in disguise. Olala points out that Ale already told him he is a man, but Angelo is fretful at the idea of being bi, and refuses to listen. He returns to Milltown, where Ale is exasperated to see him again, and further exasperated when Angelo repeatedly misgenders him, and awkwardly attempts to turn their encounter into a date.
When they are trapped by The Kite. Angelo is able to break out of his magical hold, but both he and Ale take multiple injuries. The Kite taunts Angelo for his view of good vs evil, but Angelo maintains that he will protect Olala--she may be a monster, but she has asked for his help. When allowed to escape, Angelo sends his horse, Porthos, with a message to warn the citadel (and particularly Sir Caroline) that the Kite has threatened Mira. He then apologizes to Ale, both for misgendering him and for failing to defer to his knowledge of Milltown's people and their needs. Ale intends to go defend Milltown; Angelo tells him that he will buy him as much time as he can, though he expects the Kite to ultimately kill him. Ale is dismayed, but before they can agree, they are again attacked by the Kite, who is then attacked in turn by Olala. Ale drags Angelo's unconscious body away from Olala and the Kite, only telling her to run.
Angelo awakes under the care of the dryads of Milltown, forest sprites that live symbiotically with it's human citizens. The dryads help him heal from his forty stab wounds on his back. He is later visited by Caroline, who attempts to shield him from exactly how dire the situation has gotten. He tells her the Kite is unlike any combatant he has ever encountered before, but that he does not think he is insane. Before he passes out again, he thanks Caroline for preventing he and Damien from killing Nimue back in Ballast.
Later on, he and Ale meet back up with Caroline and Olala, as well as Quanyii. Caroline comes out to Angelo about her marriage to Quanyii, and he is enthusiastically accepting. He and Caroline both decide to resign as Knights of the Crown and flee The Northern Wilds with Quanyii, Ale, Olala, and Gawain, in pursuit of other ex-knights who may hold similar views to The Kite.
Two years into this journey, after traveling The Southern Frosts for a while, Caroline asked Angelo to take charge of of group. His plans were a complete success, bar the fact they were out of resources by the time they took out their target. He and Ale went out to gather supplies, and ended up sleeping together. Ale did not speak to him the next morning, and and two of them continued this mission without talking about what happened for a week before Ale told him he was going back to the rest of the group without him, and would send someone else to help.
Quanyii joined Angelo to finish the supply run, and shortly afterward Angelo left the group. He started bounty hunting on the Northern-Southern border, earning himself the title 'Angelo the Bloody.' He grew a beard to obfuscate his appearance after finding wanted posters with his face.
Two additional years later, four years after leaving the Second Citadel, Angelo rejoined the group in the Northern Wilds on the mission to take out Sir Pellinore. Once the final great knight is defeated, the group decides to travel to the Wayward East in order to pursue Galahad, not knowing that Olala was lying about Galahad being there. They travel through the Mirrored Plains, where they are exposed to the Universe's trauma through their own demons. Angelo witnesses himself with Ale, trying to build a peaceful life with him. The vision quickly devolves into Ale being too focused on hunting Galahad to talk about the feelings they have for each other. As Olala gives Angelo a card from the Thoughtstream to break the spell, Angelo stubbornly confesses his love to Ale, comparing their love to a crystal in that without room to grow their love it simply will not grow. The group continues on to find and rescue Ale from his vision of an endless expanse of the dead bodies of people he loves.
Eventually the group reaches the edge of the desert, spotting an ocean plant in the sand. From the top of a dune, they see Silvershore, a city surrounded by a beach of silver metal, connected to the City Beneath. Angelo compliments the excellent stonework. They enter the city and stay in a hotel there while Ale earns coin for them. With Quanyii in a magical coma screaming intermittently, tensions are high at their new basecamp. Caroline in particular is very high strung and upset. When Olala and Caroline have an argument, Caroline sends her out with Angelo as supervision. Together they explore Silvershore, first looking at the poster for a theatre show, before checking out a used book store ran by Crickitilly. Olala is repeatedly embarrassed by Angelo because of how loud he's being and how little money they have. As Angelo has a friendly conversation with Crickitilly, Olala attempts to steal a book about the Western Wastes, before she is stopped. With Olala still ticked off, a Book Thief comes to the shop and him and Olala recognize each other before he runs off with a book, Olala in hot pursuit. Crickitilly yells to catch that thief and Olala grows gills to chase the thief through the underwater canals. Angelo is worried about Olala running off on her own, but resolves to wait until she returns.
When Olala returns to the hotel very late that night, Angelo wraps her in a big hug and exclaims his worry. When Olala doesn't respond in kind or explain, Angelo becomes shocked, not wanting to believe Olala would just run off without saying anything, and without even returning the book to Crickitilly. He becomes disapointed in Olala, which is not something he has felt before. Olala tries to defend herself, saying how Angelo was embarrassing her, for which he apologises, saying that has been attracting unwanted attention since he was a child. He says he will let her explore Silvershore alone tomorrow without telling Caroline, respecting her autonomy as a teenager responsible for herself, and leaves her be. Olala starts crying.
The following day, while Olala is committing crimes with her favorite new crime buddy, Angelo goes on his own adventure. He speaks with Ale before his shift at the tournament.
Personality[]
Early on Angelo sees himself as a combination between a child’s vision of a cop and a superhero. His over-protectiveness towards others can come off as condescending; his optimism about people is often naive.
Later on Angelo matures a great deal, becoming completely disillusioned with the system he was once a part of, but he remains good-natured and kind.
Abilities[]
Possesses prodigious strength, wielding a sword that weighs 30 pounds.[4] Skilled in combat and dueling, very experienced in the slaying monsters,
He reads slowly, but has developed a passion for it from Olala. Has an interest in hydration,[5] rocks, and skincare.[6]
He says "huphuphuphuphup" when he runs, which is mega cute.
His horse is named Porthos.[7] His alter ego for unsanctioned activities is the Vigilant He. His name for his career as a bounty hunter is "Angelo the Bloody".
Relationships[]
Damien[]
Angelo and Damien became best friends and rivals while training to be Knights of the Crown. They had matching monster slaying numbers, and both had the highest amount of monster slain of the new knights. Despite Damien being anxious about their friendship only being based on slaying monsters, when Damien broke his leg Angelo brought him a get-well tree and shows no sign of stopping being Damien's friend. Since they both resigned from their positions as knights and Angelo went travelling to hunt down Galahad and his allies, they were less in contact for five years, before reuiniting in Silvershore. Damien, under Sir Tristan's thumb, was overjoyed to see his old friend, and left a letter behind for him. In the letter he mentions how they were once close partners in the slaying of monsters, and he wants to make up for that. Once reunited, they fall back into a comfortable companionship, though both are now distracted by their loves.
Caroline[]
Caroline and Angelo are very close, and work together very well.
Sir Talfryn[]
Originally Angelo tries to become Talfryns mentor or hype man, before Talfryn tells him off. He then acknowledges Talfryn as both older than him and more knowledgable in a lot of things. He learns to listen to peoples problems without having to solve them.
Sir Marc[]
Aquaintences. Angelo gets along with absolutely everyone, but knows Marc less.
Olala[]
Sir Angelo guards Olala when she is imprisoned in the Citadel, and promises to train her as his "side-kicker." Later, after they leave the Northern Wilds together, Angelo teaches Olala how to read, and the two become quite close. The script describes him as a mixture of a brother and uncle.
Ale[]
Originally, Angelo thought Ale was a woman due to his narrow worldview, despite Ale telling him he's a man. He learns to accept both Ale's gender and the fact that Ale knows more about Milltown than he does.
Their friendship broke down after the two of them slept together once, and Angelo decided to leave the group. Two years later, after Angelo rejoins their group, they are friendly if slightly awkward with each other.
Quanyii[]
Quanyii is the wife of Angelo's very close friend, and they all traveled together for years. Angelo shows Quanyii respect, referring to her with a title, and the two of them work together well enough that they can finish a supply run in good time. Angelo recalls that Quanyii would often give him slug-body curses in good humor.
