Sylvie of Hiberna was a witch of the Hiberna Coven in The Southern Frosts. She lived for many centuries along with her sisters of the coven

History

Sylvie was one of the Witches of Hiberna, a coven that stretched back to before the first monster war, perhaps before the lines between Human and monster were even drawn. When Caroline was six years old, Sylvie bought her from a hunter in order to collect food for her coven, which she did regularly and with skill beyond what you would think such a young child capable of. The Witches of Hiberna did not teach Caroline their magic, but as an adult she says there were things those witches could do that even her wife Quanyii would not be able to accomplish.

Six years after acquiring Caroline, every witch in the coven aside from Sylvie was slaughtered by marauders who were desperate after a particularly hard storm. After a twelve year old Caroline returned from her hunting trip that day she attempted to kill one of the marauders. She got very close, and the leader of the group told her that if she could prove she was not the Witches' apprentice, they would train her up as one of their own. They brought out Sylvie, bloodied and bruised, and Sylvie gave Caroline a look which into adulthood she would not be sure she interpreted right. Then without a word, the child slit her throat.

History

After the Invasion of Silvershore by the Off-Worlders, Caroline, Lam and Olala end up in the Southern Frosts nearby the Hibernan Witches' Camp. She takes them there, and Sylvie possesses Olala and transforms to look like herself, saying a shapeshifting spirit medium is very convenient for this reunion. She gives Lam and Caroline a prophecy saying that Caroline must either kill Olala or doom the Universe. Caroline rejects this idea outright, and yells at Sylvie an awful lot.

Later, Caroline curses Sylvie in telling her that her choice of not killing Olala mattered at all. Quanyii points out to her that it did matter, and that it gave the Universe hope for the future of humans and monsters.

Caroline

Caroline describes Sylvie as beautiful, and says that she loved her, and suspected the Witches held some love for her, though she can never be sure. Olala asks her if since the Witches held her captive to work for them, there could ever truly be love between them; Caroline cedes this, but says that since no Witch of Hiberna lives to correct her, she will interpret her few pleasant memories as she likes. When Caroline and Sylvie are reunited, it becomes clear that Sylvie is a maternal figure to Caroline, with Caroline falling into the role of petulant child and Sylvie the strict maternal figure.

Trivia

• Sylvie claimed to have once weathered a 200 day snowstorm, but Caroline always found this a suspiciously round number. She suspects she may have made it last that long herself.
