The Janus Beast is a two-headed, ogre-like monster that preys on humans. It first appears in the Second Citadel pilot Second Citadel - The Head of the Janus Beast (Part 1).

History

The beast was created by Lord Arum using the Moonlit Hermit, with the purpose of creating monsters that could drive back the human infestation. The Janus Beast was the first monster Arum created with psychic abilities, and they were therefore flawed.

Sir Marc and Sir Talfryn fought the Janus Beast with the help of Sir Caroline, and after the fight Caroline took off with its severed head to present to The Queen. After this, the head of the beast is kept in the Hall of Trophies, where it is still concious and able to speak.

Physical Description

The Janus Beast is described to be extremely large and humanoid, with human-like tracks measuring about two feet in length. It has two heads, one looking forward and one looking backwards, which helps prevent anybody from sneaking up on it. Additionally, its arms and legs can twist around to face either side. The monster also has least sixty-four teeth.

Abilities

The monster has magical regenerative powers, which it activates by chanting a bizarre rhyme: "Two and two makes four... plus two minus two makes four...and two and two and two and two makes four twos or two fours plus two and two and two and two!" Despite the fact that the Janus Beast has two heads, it is quite simple minded and easily tricked by others.

It is also suggested that the Janus Beast may have some sort of psychic ability, as it is able to pinpoint and exploit the insecurities of Sir Marc, Sir Caroline, and Sir Talfryn as they fight it.

Trivia

• The Janus Beast most likely gets its name from the two-headed Roman god Janus, god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings.
