The Northern Wilds is the commonly accepted name for the northern region of the world in Tales of the Second Citadel.
Flora[]
The Northern Wilds is made up of thick jungles and swamps, perhaps due to its proximity to the Terminus, an ocean. The poster for the episode Second Citadel - The Caves of Discord may suggest some or all of the plants are pink rather than green. Mangoes can be found in the Northern Wilds.[1]
Fauna[]
Many non-sapient monsters call the Northern Wilds their home. This includes the Maneater Damselfly, Crocodile Hound, Rattle Panther, Cockatrice, and Giant Lungfish. Additional non-magical beasts who inhabit the north include dogs, horses, pigeons, falcons, and of course the many fish who fill the North's bodies of water.
Locations[]
The Second Citadel[]
Main article: The Second Citadel
The Second Citadel is a walled citadel that houses the majority of the Northern Wilds' human inhabitants. It was formed by the human survivors of the destruction of the First Citadel, who were supposedly saved from monster armies by The Three Saints. The Citadel is built 'up' instead of 'out', with entire quarters of the city being reserved to single, tall structures. [2]
Ballast[]
A human fishing village ten days' ride from The Second Citadel next to the Lake of Tranquility, led by Brother Hengist and Sister Horsa. They are loyal to the Queen.
The Lake of Tranquility[]
A lake that serves many purposes for its many surrounding inhabitants. It was named by the people of the Second Citadel for Saint Damien. It is the main source of food for the people of Ballast, and separates them from the monsters across the lake, including the Nymphs and the Swamp of Titan's Blooms. In the time of the Saints, just before the fall of the First Citadel, there was a massacre of monsters at this lake, referred to as the "massacre in the waves".[3]
The Swamp of Titan's Blooms[]
The Swamp of Titan's Blooms is a large region of swampland just across the Lake of Tranquility from Ballast. It is the dominion of The Keep of Titan's Blooms and its familiar Lord Arum. Every creature within the swamp, monster, plant, and animal alike, was created by the Keep itself. Amaryllis of Exile as well as the changeling Olala comment on the beauty of the swamp's namesake flowers.
The Keep of Titan's Blooms[]
Main Article: The Keep
A sentient, god-like flower from which all life in the Swamp springs. It doubles as a home for Lord Arum.
Rilla and Damien's Hut[]
After starting a relationship with Lord Arum, Amaryllis of Exile and Sir Damien move away from the Second Citadel and build a hut near The Keep so that they can be close to him, and to protest the Citadel's new stricter rules about monsters.
The Terminus[]
An ocean that serves as the Northern edge of the world. It goes out for an unknown length of distance before becoming a waterfall that drops into nothingness.
Fort Terminus[]
Main article: Fort Terminus
Fort Terminus is a large building that hangs over the Northern edge of the world, the waterfall at the end of The Terminus Sea. It has served many purposes, most recently the base for the monsters' Fear weapon. It was built in the far past by a group of humans and monsters working together to create a bridge downward off the edge of the world, before it was attacked by the Off-Worlders.[4]
Milltown[]
Main article: Milltown
A settlement under the rule of the Second Citadel (and thus Queen Mira) which is occupied and terrorized by The Kite during season 3. It is evacuated by Ale into a clearing protected by local Dryads before the Kite can burn the village down with everyone inside. Very close to an incredibly magical forest full of Dryads, which the loggers of Milltown have maintained a mutually beneficial relationship with for years- this relationship is described by Ale as being neighbourly.[5]
Quarry[]
Angelo's hometown, full of miners. Nearby the cave that contained the Echo-Beast[6] and the northern border to the Wayward East.[7]
The Giants' Sea[]
An ocean ten miles northeast of the Swamp of Titan's Blooms.[8]
Inhabitants[]
- All Second Citadel humans
- Lord Arum
- The Keep
- Sunny Budkin, Pitley, and most other Nymphs
- The Monster Senate
- Quanyii
Trivia[]
- Each of the four regions represents a season, with the Northern Wilds representing summertime.
