The Off-Worlders, also called the people off the world's edge or the Off-World invaders, are a group of humans that are not from the Universe the Tales of the Second Citadel is set on. All humans in the Universe are the ancestors of Off-Worlders who migrated there long ago, and forgot their origins in the struggle to survive[1].

History[]

The earliest known attack by these humans was that on Fort Terminus. They seem to have shelled the bridge that humans and monsters were building downwards in an attempt to travel off the edge of the world. Reports of this attack were dismissed as people having lost their mind too close to the edge of the world, and instead the monsters and humans blamed each other for the attack. The monster Pix reports having seen lights off the edge of the world,[2] and Judge Helicoid's podium rests at the end of an arc of the shell witnessed by Damien in a flashback. The podium is made of unrecognizable metal which contains anti-magical properties.[3]

Another attack we know of is that attack on the Wayward East, then called the Verdan East. That attack caused the universe so much trauma that the forest was replaced with a vast desert with large violet crystals, and entering the desert causes Mirrored Madness.

According to The Hand, they have previously invaded and taken over at least three other Universes, likely many more.

Abilities[]

The Off-Worlders have invented many machines for use in the capture of Universes. These include aeroplanes for air-fighting, as well as machines for land and sea battle.[1] These aeroplanes have many bombs in them, both "small" and "big" and they are also organised enough to level a city with over a million residents. They also possess whatever technology changed the Verdant East to the Mirrored Plains, possibly atomic bombs. It is also unclear if the "big" bombs that dropped after the first hour of the invasion of Silvershore[4] had radioactive properties.

They also possess the technology used to drain the magic out of "Universes", which is used to power their cities and technology. These machines resemble drills, and suck the life force out of the Universe. This affects all magical creatures in the Universe, with constructs and familiars being the first to go.[5] The Lichenates could sense the draining of magic in the Wayward East all the way from the Northern Wilds, and constructs could already feel the affects by the time the Off-Worlders were finished draining Silvershore.

When invading the Center of the Universe, they use guns with blades on the end, smaller, faster aeroplanes, armored carts with cannons on them, and sea weapons. Additionally, machine gun fire can be heard in the background during the invasion.[6]

Infrastructure[]

They seem to have entire armies at their disposal with soldiers like the Pilot, run by mysterious leaders. The Hand seems to be a special field agent of some sort who runs individual invasions of universes.[7]
